Hospital Library
INTRODUCTION: Federal Medical Centre library
(Hospital library) is a department under Administration Directorate established
in January 2005 under the supervision of staff who are not librarians. In 2009,
two librarians were employed and consequently took over the responsibility of
managing the library. The first Head of the Library Department was Kabir
Ishyaku who served between 2009 and 2013. Later in 2014, Salamatu Sani Junaid
was appointed acting head of the Department.
The
current modern Library Complex was built in 2014 and commissioned on 15th
August, 2014. The library has become an
integral part of the organization designed to provide an up-to-date information
material to assist physicians, health professionals, students, medical
researchers, nurses etc. in finding health, scientific and other related
information in order to improve, assess and update health care as it is the
primary objective of the Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kebbi.
The
Library houses a large collection of books, journals, newspapers, magazines and
other medical related information resources that are organized systematically
for consultation, research, reading and referencing. The library was set up to
meet the information needs of all medical and other professionals of the institution
and to provide a conducive reading atmosphere for our students.
The
library runs a shift duty operation as follows:
Mondays to Fridays: 8:00am to 3:00pm
3:00pm to 9:00pm
Saturdays: 8:00am to 1:00pm.
SCOPE
OF RESPONSIBILITY
Hospital Librarians are information
specialists charged with the following responsibilities:-
- Selection and acquisition of all
information materials needed in the library, in print, non-print or database.
- Organizing information resources and
making them easily accessible to hospital staff and students.
