Ear, nose and throat, head and neck (ENT-H&N) otherwise known as Oto-rhino-laryngology (ORL) is a surgical specialty that provide care for people with Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) related diseases.
  A Brief History
The Department of ENT Surgery is one of the Clinical Departments in Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. It was established as a unit in 2003 by the then Medical Director Dr. Ramatu Y. Hassan and was manned by a visiting consultant ENT Surgeon, Dr. K. R. Iseh.
In 2010, Late Dr. Sahabi Bande became the Pioneer Head of ENT Unit until his demise in 2013. Following this unfortunate incident, the department was then managed only by ENT trained nurses, a medical officer and visiting consultant Otorhinolaryngologists from various parts of the country. In the previous years, ENT was functioning as a unit under the department of surgery before it was made a department in January, 2019 and Dr Wasiu Omotosho was appointed as the head of department.
The head of department is working closely with the other staff to pursue academic excellence and rendering of quality Otorhinolaryngological care and services for all patients.
Departmental Mission Statement
To render quality and cost-effective Otorhinolaryngological services to our teaming patients.
To have full accreditation from both the West African College of Surgeons and The National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria.
To train Residents who can meet up with global standards in the medical knowledge and management of ENT diseases / Head and neck surgeries.

Scope of Responsibility
The ORL department offer diagnostic and therapeutic services. We also participate in training and research programs.
The department offers expertise care to patients referred from other clinical departments within the hospital or from outside the hospital.
We run clinic twice in a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) at the ENT OPD. Surgical operations in the theatre including minor and major procedures take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, though, some minor ENT procedures are carried out on Fridays. However, the department is open to emergencies 24 hours daily with doctors and nurses running calls to receive the emergency cases.
Friday is mainly for academic activities; these include bedside teachings and clinical meeting / grand round.
The department also renders some audiological services and speech therapy to patients.
We also offer free medical outreach to communities within the state.
The Consultants, Medical Officer(s), speech Therapist/Audiologist, Nurses and ward Maids all work as a team to ensure the smooth running of the department to achieve patient-centered care.
Staff Training and Research
As part of our manpower development, all category of staff is encouraged to attend scientific conferences, workshops, and seminars as much as possible. They are also encouraged to do research either as an individual or in collaboration with others to improve the quality of Ear, Nose and Throat care for the patient
Future Prospects
The department is working assiduously to start running subspecialist clinics (otology/skull base surgery, audiology, rhinology, laryngology/head and neck and Paediatrics Otolaryngology). These will be achieved after manpower development in the various subspecialties. Furthermore, we shall start providing full audiological services after acquiring all the necessary equipment in the near future.
ENT Department in FMC, Birnin Kebbi has come to stay and is fast growing to meet the increasing demands of ORL services and training in the Northwestern zone of the country. With more funding, provision of modern facilities and manpower training the sky shall be our stepping-stone.
